Here we go. Page 8 marks a turning point and sets the tone for the remainder of the issue. As the issue title “Night Raid” implies, we’re raidin’ and it’s dark.
I really tried to loosen my scripting and plotting this issue, thinking in bigger sweeps and bigger action. This allows for larger panels, like the three large panels on this page, in which Samir can do his thing with more freedom, clarity, and purpose.
I was really pleased when I received this page. It had the look of a Marvel comic I might have bought off the spinner rack in 1989. Facilities, henchmen, and supernatural beings all colliding together.
We get a lot of realism in superhero comics nowadays- dramatic conversations set in coffee shops and the like. I’m guilty of that, from time to time. These characters start talking to you and you just want to let them have their say. But this issue takes a different approach. It’s a kind of counterbalance to the more introspective and “talky” issue #3. It takes all the tension set up in the preceding issues and sets a match to it. Now we get to watch the fireworks.
This page makes me feel like I’m reading an issue of What If? on a summer day, Slushie in one hand and comic in the other. Not a care in the world.
You’ll notice my inclusion of the longstanding comic catch phrase “Hit ’em hard and fast!” This is something like the Wilhelm Scream of comics. I try to sneak one in wherever I can. Let ‘er rip!
